You are just a wimp!

You exercise and you don’t lift a lot of weight, so what, does that constitute that you are just a wimp?

I was on a forum the other day and a young person was quite discouraged that he had tried an Insanity workout of some sort and was not losing but had actually gained 20 pounds.  Now I  must say that I am not privy to any more details than that, but the guy was obviously devastated… I can’t imagine that the gain was all muscle by the guy’s response, but come on 20 pounds put on, exhausted and hungry all the time!  Who in their right mind would want to continue with a program that had you gaining weight (when your goal is to lose) and being hungry and frustrated?

Lack of Energy = Wimp?

I, for one, have no interest in a program that leaves me exhausted.  Sore muscles I can handle, but without energy!  Not a chance!  I am doing this whole exercises and look after myself to gain energy and have the strength and ability to move and do things, not be exhausted!  Does it make me a wimp, that I don’t want to live with a lack of energy?

Restriction = Wimp?

I am not big on counting calories or measuring food or restricting either.  I do believe in a lifestyle change of eating healthy food choices.  Who has time to count out calories, to weigh food, to figure out what amount is being consumed? Does that make me a wimp cause I don’t do the hard core restriction thing?   I guess I could but I have other things that I like to do with my time.  How about you, do you count your calories?

Back at it, is the best

Back to the forum.  There was a response that basically told this guy he was a wimp because of the weight he was using.  Do you think that that will help the guy out and change what he is doing?  I hardly expect so.  I figure it is great that he is back at it working on making the exercise thing part of his lifestyle.

Quick Fix = Long Term Results?

People need to realize they have to start somewhere.  I see so many things that indicate a great idea for quick weight loss or quick muscle gain ( and that is what most people seem to be attracted to, the quick fix).  Does it really do what you want?  How many of you have been on a weight loss or muscle gain program and got the results you wanted long term?

Lifestyle Change

It is an ongoing lifestyle change, we know this, but we keep buying into the quick fix idea.   Why do you think this is?  I’d love to hear your opinion.  Please leave a comment below.

  1. OK so I guess I am a wimp too LOL. I don’t do weights and I don’t count calories.
    But I’m healthy, energetic and haven’t been sick since February 2008 – so if that makes me a wimp, then so be it!

    I do feel sorry for the guy on the forum you mentioned though – how devastating to be hungry, tired AND gaining weight! Hopefully he’ll take your advice and make some LIFESTYLE changes rather than humongous exertions that leave his body screaming for mercy.

      Hello Goddess Jacqui! You are certainly not a wimp. I may keep bugging you about those weights though. Being strong going into those middle years and then way later on the senior years we want strong to stay upright, have balance and coordination and just plain old stability. Cheers!

  2. I don’t believe in quick fixes or latest weight loss programs. That’s how most people gain back double the weight they started with in the first place. What I believe is slowly incorporating healthy changes into your lifestyle – both eating healthy foods and being active. Consistency is the key and the results will not come as fast as the “quick fixes”, but you’re able to retain the results as well.

    Trying to do it all at once is not the answer. Slow and steady with the right attitude and mindset. The weight will come off slowly-the key word here- by exercising consistently and eating right. Sometimes herbal weight loss supplements help accelerate the process, but it still comes down to doing it right and not looking for a quick fix.

      Thanks for sharing. I agree with you. Slow and steady wins out! Too much too quickly (mostly)often doesn’t end up in successful in long term results.

    Oh, that guy was me!! I wasn’t a wimp, I seriously exercised 3-5 times per week for over 16 years. I can even show my gym card to prove it! I gained so much weight too, just like him!! The problem was I was starving myself because I was told to DIET to lose weight, and I have ruined my metabolism, so no matter how much I exercised my body was Starving and will never let go of the weight!! In fact, he will continue to gain weight just like I did. You are correct Holly, it’s not muscle, it’s fat because his body is starving for nutrition and he is not giving it to his body. This is the cycle of “Food Addiction” that most “normal” people have no clue about including physicians! I did a post on it awhile ago. Maybe it’ll help people to understand what is really going on with his body.

    As you know, I found my solution back in 1995 and have kept all my weight off and I am medication free, now for 15 1/2 years and I am free!! No starving, no dieting, and it’s not a fast fix, it’s just simple and takes very little time. I am a wimp when it comes to exercise though, as I am at home now, so I guess you could call my 3 story house exercise…heehee! :)

    Thank you for always being open Holly! I think you are awesome and you are helping me understand your target market. Now I know where to send people who want what you offer and visa versa. I truly admire your courage.

      I know that you aren’t a wimp Kellie! All to often I have ran into people who have done the exercise excessively and cut back majorly on calories only to be faced with defeat. We have to find out what works for us on an individual basis. I still believe that no matter what, we have to do something for our muscles and bones, and we have to get out of that all American overeating habit. I personally want to be upright and strong for that aging thing that looms ahead of me. I see too many older people who can’t stand well, certainly can’t bend well and too often have trouble even getting to a seated position. I want to avoid that. So I start now and continue throughout my life as I want to be mobile as absolutely long as possible. Thanks for sharing!

    I wonder if you can pass the following along to the person you are refering to,

    I am talking from my own personal experience of lossing 30lbs and 5.5 inches of
    my waist in 6 months.

    I used to belive that maybe I had some type of medical condition preventing me from loosing weight. This was before I started to really own my lifestyle and I realised that I was far more likely to simply be lazy then to have a medical condition.

    So I took control over my de-railing health and did the following:

    1. I found a workout at home program that was a bit higher then my current fitness level. I first started with P90X but that left me feeling like I was run over by a train so I settled with P90M.

    2. I didn’t get the diet down right away but I did my best to not put crap into my mouth. My biggest problems here was giving up candy so every time I passed through the grocery store and didn’t buy candy I would celebrate by patting myself on my shoulder and mentaly or even spoken out loud I would say GREAT JOB TOBIAS!

    3. Consistency in training, I would come home from work and work out, in the beginning I could only cope with doing it 3x a week although the schedule called for 5-6 days a week.

    Over time my body adapted and when I got up to 4-5 times a week the results wasn’t slow in showing.

    4. Mental attitude over the long term, I realised early on that I am in it for the long haul, that meant focusing on celebrating the small victories and taking small step every day. Over the next couple months I gradually improved the quality of the food I was eating, I calculated my nutrional values and created a diet plan.

    Summery;

    My success in weight loss really comes down to a few things I have mentioned above.

    1. Don’t put crap into your mouth – you’re gonna eat it
    2. Consistency – If you don’t workout your not going to loose weight
    3. Follow a workout plan that is a little bit higher then your current fitness level

      Your list of 3 makes it sound so simple. I can see you know that it isn’t that simple though. You sound like you have done a lot of work. Love to hear it. Love to hear that you are still doing what it takes. Thanks for sharing here. I greatly appreciate it. Mental attitude does have a great deal to do with it too. Glad that you also incorporate that. Do you still give yourself lots of celebration “GREAT JOB TOBIAS”? I know that that is what I need to do more of. Thanks for the reminder.

      • Hi Holly, yes I do give myself a lot of celebration and I recently had the great senesation of looking at my body and feeling “wow I really am satisfied with how I look”. I can’t remember the last time I felt that.

        The list of 3 is quite simplified and it does take more then that but those are the 3 major corner stones behind my success and when it comes down to it loosing weight is really all about discipline and motivation to do what it takes.

  6. I almost forgot,

    If he feels he has no energy and is gaining weight he is probably eating to little
    Resulting in his body being in starvation mode and hoarding fat. Basically he needs
    to calculate how much calories he needs to eat just to function properly, then take into account his workout level and then cut back the calories with 20%.

    I would highly recommend that he invests either in a workout program that comes with a diet plan that explains all this or hire a dietist that does it for him. After all you need to put formula 1 fuel in a formula 1 card. If you fill it up with diesel it ain’t going nowhere…

    I truly hope this guy will keep his efforts up as everyone deserve a healthy lifestyle.

  9. that poor guy! suffice to say, not all the info we read online is good or true!

    it’s sad to see so many suffer with weight loss.

    i used to be a fat marathon runner–how’s that for a paradox? i lost my weight almost 7 years ago, and haven’t had to worry about it once. it used to be a struggle, but once i understood that being fit and thin is simple, my life changed.
