So what is a workout? It isn’t the same to everyone. Not at all. I believe that a workout is going to make me sweat and I will be a bit fatigued when I am done.. I will not likely want to go out after a workout until I have showered and changed my clothes.
What is your idea of what a workout is?
I had a great conversation the other day, well actually it ended rather quickly. I was as strong in my believe as he was in his! I thought my definition of a workout was right and he thought his definition of a workout was right. I workout according to my definition all the time, he does not. I am not even sure that he does what he calls a workout very often. Well I guess he does. He works in the construction industry and is active most days lifting and walking; some days way more than others. He says a workout is anything that involves movement.
I totally disagree. So I decided to check out the dictionary and find out what it says.
Workout is :
From Dictionary.com
1. a trial or practice session in athletics as in running, boxing, or football
2. a structured regime of physical exercise: She goes to the gym for a workout twice a week.
3. any trial or practice session.
4. an act or instance of working something out.
From Webster’s Dictionary
Training session for an boxer, athlete etc.
Google dictionary:
A workout is a period of physical exercise or training.
Is this a workout?
So, does walking from the far side of the parking lot constitute a workout? What about taking the stairs instead of the elevator? What about mowing the lawn? Or washing the walls? How about vacuuming, or sweeping or shovelling the walk? How about going for a bike ride?
So after I did some research and some thinking, I still couldn’t believe that this fellow thought that a workout was anything that involves movement. So I asked him for more examples. Well then he said that ” a workout is anything that involves MORE movement than you usually do.” That I understood!! That I could deal with. Not that I needed to agree with this fellow. We can’t all be on the same wave length I needed to have an understanding from someone who thought differently than me.
Having a difference of opinion can be helpful.
So, doing more than you normally do is definitely a workout for some people. I feel that it has to be a significant amount of time and energy that is put into the work out. I would say that 5 minutes is a not a work out: but to someone it is. You have to start somewhere and if 5 minutes it where you start, that is where you start. Just don’t stop at 5 minutes!! Keep on working out until you can do a longer workout. Keep working out regularly as well!!
So what is your definition of a workout? What do you do for your workout? I would love to hear from you. I am always looking for new and different things to learn and connect with.

Holly,
Your definition of exercise was mine until a few years ago when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. From that time forward, I began using dumbbells, the Total Gym and walking, walking and more walking. I am now using exercise CD’s and working my way up to P90X. If others can do it, so can I.
Am really enjoying your terrific blog:)
