Have you thought of introducing your muscles to some strength training in 2013? Perhaps a goal for you can be to introduce your muscles to more strength?? Some of us, mainly woman quiver in fear when we hear that!! However I am here to tell you that you had best work on your strength or by the time you are 60 you are really going to start falling apart! Actually by 60 you may struggle to do many things. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be ‘old’ by the time I hit 60!! (which of course brings up the question ‘what is old’)
I mean that in kindness to draw your awareness to the fact that from the age of 60-69 you will lose your strength the most.. although you are steadily losing if from about age 30.. perhaps a little sooner or a little later… That old saying “if you don’t use it you lose it”!
Do you strengthen your muscles?? Do you love to move your muscles and are you in awe about the ability of what your amazing body can do? Have you ever sat down and just admired what an amazing intricate balance of intelligence your body has just to get you moving?
Have you ever done lots of exercise when you exercise pretty regular and notice you wake up the next day with some sore muscles or muscle fibers that you hadn’t noticed before? This is really a good thing! Those muscles need attention!
What is your experience? Do you use your muscles to workout? Or just to do what happens in your life?
Did you know that you are steadily losing your strength? How do you feel about that? Is it important to you?
Holly

This has actually been on my mind quite a bit lately and has become kind of a goal of mine – to fit different types of exercise into my routine

Hey Diane Marie! Have you found a gym close to you? How is the Yoga going? The goals for 2013?
Holly, love it! We get so fixated on cardio and forget our essential muscles! Stretching as well as weight-bearing and strengthening. A timely reminder – and fun post title! Warmly, EL

Thanks Emma-Louise!! I so believe that the muscles is so important.. Yes cardio has it’s place, but without muscle we are missing much!!
I’ve been doing weight training for three years now. It’s been especially great for building upper body strength and tone – a problem area for most women. I find that I work best if I take a class – my gym offers something called “muscle mix” which is strength and resistance training. It’s hard for me to get motivated without a coach/class instructor.

Hey Kimba!! Great to hear!! I have lots of ladies in my class who agree with you! It’s hard to get motivate with out a coach/class instructor!! Or at least easier to slack off and not work as hard!! Thanks for stopping by!!
I actually love weight training. That, yoga and walking are my favorites.Having said that I have slacked off over the holidays so thanks for the kick to get back to it in 2013!

Thank you for being a great example and great coach Holly!

So Nick, did you find those weights yet? I thought I’d check up on you to see if you got some movement going into your day? Used those muscles extra today?
Hello Holly, I’ve been going to the Gym (with some breaks) since I was about 25 (about 30 years ago). It’s made a tremendous difference to my life! When I was 21, I was told by doctors that I had arthritis in both knees and I’d be in a wheelchair by the time I was 40. Hah! they didn’t know me:-) I played along with it for quite a few years, thinking I had to accept it, but luckily someone told me I should strengthen my quadriceps to help my knees. And I did! It makes a HUGE difference, and I’ve combined the gym exercises and other nutritional products to eliminate any pain altogether. In fact, I don’t even feel like I have arthritis anymore, the doctors were wrong, which isn’t the first time!

Love to hear stories like this!! Too many people take the advice of someone who thinks they know!! It takes work but it can be done!! Great on your Julieanne!
Hi Holly, I do strength train but I need to step up my game in 2013. I really like doing things like dancing, walking, and working on the elliptical so now I have started adding in strength training. Thanks for the good reminder!

So good to hear that you have added strength to your program!! It is too important to neglect!! Good on you, Shelley!
I do strength training, not as heavy as I use to as I am no longer competing in 3 sports a year, but to try to get tone. Strength exercising is great for losing weight as well.

Strength training is great for losing weight, that is for sure!! Some people may not lose ‘weight’ as they get muscle but I understand what you mean! Muscle is the ally!! Thanks so much for sharing, Nile!
I love strength training, I’ve been doing it for years. It has so many benefits – from maintaining strong bones to giving us, well – strength, that we are going to naturally lose as we age if we’ve not done anything to prevent it. Great way to raise awareness of its importance.

You are so right, Dena-Lynn! Come back soon as I have a couple of posts coming up and there are even more reasons to strength train than you have mentioned!
When I first started exercising in earnest, I was a runner, well, more like a jogger I guess, but then I started strength training with free weights and I really enjoyed that. I don’t do that so much now, but I am doing more bodyweight exercises and have gone through the P-90x. I feel pretty good most days, better than I ever felt without exercising that’s for sure.
