All Time Biggest Disadvantage to Missing a Work Out

What do you think is the all time biggest disadvantage to missing a work out?

I recently wrote a post and I talked about missing a work out isn’t always a bad thing.  And it isn’t!  If it is just one or two. However the biggest problem is that if too many are missed it’s tough to get back to it at all!

Does that make sense to you?  Makes total sense to me.  If you are working to make the effort to get a work out in, then if it gets missed it is easier and easier to not fit it in.  Right?

I read an article the other day about time and how we waste a lot of time throughout a year.  In fact the majority of us likely use up 32.5 days every year engaged in wasting time.  Seriously.. I don’t know about you, and this may be hard to swallow, we all, unless very efficient users of time, waste time.  Or use it doing things that really aren’t in our best moving forward interest.

Are you one to say “I don’t have time”?  I have so much to do? or If I had the time I would?  Think about the last time you used that sentence?

Now I am not saying that we are all wasters of time, we just need to be a little more diligent about how we use our time.

We have 168 in every single week.  We have to sleep and I will be generous here and say that you sleep 8 hours per day… That takes away  56 hours so you have 112 hours left in your week.  You have to prepare for work ( shower eat, etc) and you have to  prepare meals and recreation time so let’s give that portion of your day 3 hours each for a total of 21 per week.  We now have 91 hours left in the week.

Let’s say you have a full time job and you also travel to work and that takes  up  50 hours of your week. (some of you may have longer commute times and therefore you can add that if you want, but then perhaps that commute time could be doing something productive.. Depending on whether you drive or not!)  But for the sake of the point I am making here let’s stick with 50 hours.  You are now down to 41 hours per week.  Let’s take off 6 hours for errands and walking the dog miscellaneous things .  35 hours are left in your week.. You have, grocery shopping to do and running kids around so let’s take off 25 more hours for that…   And VOILA, you have 10 hours left… 10 hours!!  that equates to 520 hours per year which is 32.5 days…  And you don’t have time for exercise?

I know that I was little shocked when I figured this out.  I knew that I wasn’t as efficient with my time as I could be but when I actually did the calculations, I was a bit surprised.  I didn’t add watching  tv in there as I don’t watch tv.  Many of you will put that in their as your recreation or miscellaneous time…  Some of you may say oh I have to watch my  “such and such” show.  But is it really fulfilling your life and your health?  Peace of mind can be found in much more constructive ways!

Anyways, I challenge you to work through your week and see what you are doing that you can change to make exercise work into your schedule regularly.  I am sure there are other things that you would LOVE to do that you just can’t work into your schedule… Maybe you can fit it in some way if you rearrange things a little.  I know that I am working at being more productive.  Having a more fulfilling life is worth it.

Please leave your comments below.  I would love to hear how you fit things into your day so that you make the most of your time.

PS.  I took this info and changed it a little as  many people I know have a much bigger work week than was suggested in the original video I got this from.  Perhaps you would like to check it out here.

PPS.  I am going to be writing an article about all kinds of things one can do to make activities around the house and yard much more effective for the body.  For strength.  Come back soon and check it out.

  1. Thanks for sharing this post Holly, and I think you may be closer to the mark with the amount of time people work! I’m a little bit out of the loop working from home for myself although I do tend to work long hours when I’ve got major projects going on.

    Many Thanks

Thanks for your great article, Gavin. I just know several people who take up more of their day for work and travel and so I thought I would change it up a bit. It can make a huge difference if one works from home. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

  2. I have been working out for quite a long time and I am loving it so much. I don’t really want to miss my work-out. I usually spent 1-2 hours at the gym. For me, regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy. People who are active live longer and feel better. Exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight. Anyway, thanks sharing us your great post!

Thanks for your great comment, Tony! Many people don’t ‘have’ 1-2 hours to spend in a gym, good for you for making that a priority!

  3. My oh my! I don’t know where to start! lol

For me, working full time from home makes me lose track of time all to often. I LOVE what I do so the time just seems to fly by! I don’t watch t.v. very much so no time wasted there, ha!

I try to focus on income generating activities like creating content and marketing. From there I try to balance with hanging with my kiddos! I need more arms to be honest, lol!!

My next goal is to do alot of out sourcing in order to free up more of my time.

Enjoyed your post, thank you! :-)

It is so easy to lose track of time that is for sure!! I plan it into my day! If I don’t’ plan it, it doesn’t get done!! I am going to keep an ear open to find out when you start doing more for you Roshanda!! Your body will love it and so will your kids. ( what games do you play with them?)

  4. Holly,
I’m right with you on this one! I am always amazed at how much time I spend sitting at my desk! As you know I don’t watch TV and I watch movies 20 minutes on my stationary bike, but man, I’m online all day! I try to get up and walk around the house every hour. I was doing well for a while but now I’m back to sitting to long! I thank you for the reminder!!!

Oh my! I’m so guilty after reading your post. I really wanted to work out but I always give such nonsense reasons to my self to postpone working out. Thanks for inspiring and for the informative article.

Don’t feel guilty!! Just get up and do something, Even if it is just a little. As yo get used to doing some little thing you will learn to appreciate it and start doing more and more.. Give yourself a pat on the back for recognizing that you know you need to do more and then just get at it.. Then do the happy dance for doing the activity!! Thanks for stopping by, April!

Hey Holly, this is a powerful lesson. When I first heard it years ago, it made so much sense to me. It really hits you when you realize you’ve got 168 hours a week available to you. When you start subtracting out the actual things you do you realize how much time is spent or wasted between activities or events. Great post, thanks!

Hi Hans, It is amazing what we can fit in when we want to. I used to have no choice becasue of the schedule that I had with my JOB. Now that I am my own boss, it takes a little more effort to organize. I was actually amazed at how much time I use up doing things that I used to do so much more efficiently!

  7. Great post, Holly! I work on trying to build reading time into my schedule, because that’s probably the biggest need for me right now. However, I think that what ultimately happens with me is the risk of overdoing it and crashing and burning too soon. The real trick is to figure out how much time the key things take, and then worry about the side things. If you do this, you might even have more time for the side things because you aren’t exhausted and slogging through the vital things.

Planning does help. And of course things may take longer than expected, interruptions happen too. Choosing what is the most important to us is key. We all have 24 hours in a day, we get to choose how to spend it.. You are right, we don’t want to be exhausted and slogging through the vital things. Thanks for sharing, Steve!
